Le petit Futé nous apprend de plus, que le château est situé sur le front de mer et qu'il a été édifié a l'origine sur des vestiges romains et sarasins. Ce château a été la demeure seigneuriale des comptes de Villeneuve jusqu'à la Révolution. Il fut acheté par la suite, à l'état de ruine en 1918 par un couple d'artistes américains, Henry et Marie Clews, qui le reconstruisirent dans un style néo-médiéval. Le château est actuellement la propriété d'une association de soutien et d'aide aux jeunes artistes du monde entier
Un salon de thé situé sur les remparts surplombant la mer est ouvert au public durant la période estivale. Le château accueil aussi des évènements privés.
